Bathroom countertop materials for your home - Part 1
While bathroom countertops are sometimes made from unusual materials, such as wood or stainless steel, most of today's bathroom countertops are created from one of several different materials. In part 1 of this series, Able & Ready Construction will discuss some options for bathroom countertop materials for your Prescott home.
Laminates
Perhaps your memories of laminate are of the ugly, metal-edged laminates from back in the day. You owe it to yourself to take a look at the newest products from the top manufacturers. The look and feel of laminates have developed so much in recent years, they can fool you into thinking they are wood, marble, granite, or even leather or stainless steel!
Here are some basics of laminate countertops:
- Laminates are manufactured from layers of plastic that are bonded to a particleboard (MDF) core
- This process creates a solid countertop surface
- Laminate countertops are available in stock pieces that anyone can cut to size and fit into place
- Laminates can also be custom-made by fabricators to your specifications
- Custom laminates can include custom edges and other designer features
Tile
Tiles are traditional countertop materials, but they are now commonly used in trendy, modern styles of homes. This is largely due to recent technology, especially with porcelains.
The three traditional tile countertops are:
- Ceramic
- Porcelain
- Glass
Ceramic tiles have been traditionally made of clay with a surface glaze. Then they are heated by fire, which hardens them. Porcelain is a type of ceramic, but with porcelain, finer clays are used. Porcelain is fired under higher temperatures, resulting in a harder and denser material. Porcelain is excellent for both floors and countertops. Porcelain can be crafted to mimic beautiful materials such as wood or leather. The design options are numerous. Glass tiles, while different from ceramics, are installed in much the same way as ceramic tile. Glass tiles also offer many style and design options.
