Bathroom countertop materials for your home - Part 2
In Part 1 of this discussion, we discussed laminates and tile as bathroom countertop options. In Part 2, Able & Ready Construction talks about other bathroom countertop materials for your Prescott home.
Solid-Surface
Solid-surface countertop materials are created from a blend of acrylic and polyester particles bonded together with resins. They are usually fashioned to resemble stone. Solid-surface materials can be formed into a variety of shapes, even all-in-one countertops with integrated sink basins. Many different colors and sheens are available from top manufacturers.
Natural Stone
Natural stone is recognized as a step above ceramic or porcelain tile as a countertop material. Many kinds of stone are used, including marble, granite, slate, soapstone, limestone, travertine and onyx. Natural stone bathroom countertops are usually thick and solid slabs with openings cut for the sinks. Some stone countertops are constructed with tiles like ceramic tile countertops.
There are pros and cons for each type of stone countertop. Here are some of the common types of stone used and some information about them:
- Marble is one of the most beautiful of the natural stones. It can be purchased in a great variety of colors and styles. Marble is relatively soft and porous and needs to be sealed every year or so.
- Slate is a good hard countertop material. Slate resists stains because it is less porous than granite or marble. Colors are mostly limited to uniform hades of green, gray or black.
- Limestone and its close relative, travertine, are rare for bathrooms. Although beautiful, they need to be carefully and repeatedly sealed when used in countertops. Slabs can be purchased, but these countertops are made from tiles of these stones.
