Flooring options for your home
Do you have carpet that is 15 years old, stained and worn out? Or maybe you’re updating your decor and the existing carpet or flooring doesn’t fit. Able & Ready Construction discusses flooring options for your Prescott home.
If you are thinking about replacing flooring in your home, just do some simple evaluation. Consider the benefits, costs, and the possible downsides of each type of flooring before you make your final decision. Here are some of the most popular types of flooring, the rooms for which they are best suited and their pros and cons:
Laminate
- Pros: Laminate can be a great choice in that it does not easily scratch. When it does, a little vegetable oil rubbed on the scratch is a quick fix. Like hardwoods, laminate is easy to clean. You can even make your own cheap and natural house cleaners. It often has the look of real wood or tile. It is also a great choice if you have pets because they can’t scratch or stain it.
- Cons: Standing water will quickly destroy laminate flooring, for example water leaking from under the kitchen sink or from a refrigerator. If the laminate does get ruined, unlike read hardwoods, laminate can not be refinished, it must be replaced.
- Best rooms: Laminate is great for high traffic areas or rooms with a lot of activity. Avoid putting it in a kitchen, bathroom, or a laundry room since laminate should not get wet.
Hardwood
- Pros: Hardwoods look stunning and add great resale value to a home. They are easy to clean and maintain. In fact, they usually only require vacuuming, although they also may need refinishing occasionally in high-traffic areas.
- Cons: The cost is sometimes largest drawback, although you can find good prices. Like tile, hardwoods can be loud to walk on. Standing water can also ruin hardwoods.
- Best Rooms: The best place to put hardwoods is in a living room, because of its elegance. You can use rugs to muffle the noise a bit.
Tile
- Pros: Glazed ceramic tile is very durable and resistant to scratches. It is water resistant. Tile comes in a variety of sizes and materials, such as porcelain, travertine, slate, marble, and granite. Tile is very easy to clean, and stains are not much of a concern.
- Cons: Like some wood floors, tile can be fairly loud to walk on. It can also be cold, and heating systems for tile tend to be fairly expensive. Tiles can crack, and grout may stain and need to be cleaned and sealed.
- Best Rooms: Since tile is water resistant, it is perfect for bathroom, kitchens and dining rooms.
